Custom Discord bot for your guild: build it yourself or buy one?

AI makes it possible to build your own guild Discord bot. Here's what it really costs in money and time, and the cheaper alternative.

Let's face it: it's 2026, almost 2027, and AI is everywhere and more available than ever. Making your own Discord bot is no longer unrealistic. On the contrary, it can be done with ease. The problems show up over time, and this post covers them, how to avoid them, and the alternative you have.

What a paid bot costs

Say you need a ticketing bot that's branded: your colors, your logo and so on. Paying for one will likely run you around $100 a year, if not more. That's one bot. If you need more, you're looking at $200, $300 or even higher per year.

What building it yourself costs

AI can make you a ticketing bot in a matter of minutes. Put some extra hours into it and you can customize it fully to your preferences. Hosting can cost as little as about $14 a year, and if you prepay for 2, 3 or 4 years, the yearly price drops to around $10. For someone who knows what they're doing, building and deploying a bot, hosting included, takes one to three days of work.

So is there a catch? A few. Nothing groundbreaking, but you do have to keep them in mind.

1. A regular AI chat won't be enough

A regular AI chatbot won't do a great job of building a bot and helping you set it up. It will take far longer and hit its limits. You'll want a coding-focused AI tool (like Claude Code or similar), which typically has a monthly cost of roughly $20. That's a hidden cost people often don't count.

2. It takes longer than you think

If you're new to this, even with AI giving you detailed instructions, building, setting up and deploying a bot will take far longer than a day or two. Plan for up to a week. And then you have to test it, and possibly deploy fixes when you find bugs, which adds even more hours.

3. Maintenance never fully goes away

If you've never done it, you don't know what to expect. For the most part, it's easy. Discord might change something on its end that requires a small code tweak. You might need to deploy a quick update, or sometimes restart your hosting. None of this is hard, but it takes time, and you might have to buy another month of a coding AI to do it, which adds to your investment.

4. Security is on you

A bot has a secret token and permissions inside your server. Keep the token private, never paste it in public, and give the bot only the permissions it needs. A mistake here can put your whole server at risk.

So what does it really cost?

Building it yourself is still cheaper than most bots on the market, but it takes much more of your time. If you're busy, ask yourself how much an hour is worth to you.

If you spent 20 hours building and deployingIt's worth
At $5 an hour$100
At $10 an hour$200
At $20 an hour$400

That's before you count the AI subscription and hosting.

The alternative: a custom-built bot

That's why Guild Forging offers custom-built bots. I've built numerous bots for guilds, and I give you the bot, the hosting and even the branding if you need it.

PackagePriceWhat's included
Rare: single module$60One module of your choice: tickets, guild applications or roles. Branded and hosted for 12 months
Epic: full system$120All three modules, branded to your guild and hosted for 12 months
Legendary: full system and logo$200The full system, plus your tabard turned into a logo and brand colors. Hosted for 12 months

After the first 12 months, hosting and upkeep renew at $40 a year per bot, and I keep an eye on the bot so it runs smoothly. In other words, your yearly bot cost is $40, instead of $100 or more.

Every package also includes a month of support after delivery: ask me anything, and I'll handle minor edits.

What the modules do

  • Tickets: members open private threads with leadership, for questions or complaints.
  • Guild applications: a form that collects applications in one place, so leadership can review them.
  • Roles: members pick their class, role or professions with a click.

No logo or colors yet? That's what the Legendary package is for. Not sure how to set up the rest of your server first? Read How to set up a guild Discord and Free Discord templates.
