What is guild branding?
Guild branding is how people see your WoW guild: its look, voice and reputation. Learn what it includes and how to build it for free.
A guild is far more than an in-game group of people who chat on Discord and raid together. Branding is what turns it into something people recognize and want to join.
Does every guild need it?
No. Some people just want to chill, raid with their friends and keep things simple, and that's perfectly fine. A guild like that doesn't need a brand.
But if you're building something you want to last for years, something that will have people joining from all over the globe, branding helps a lot.
What branding actually means
Branding is how you're perceived by others, and what feeling you convey. For a guild, that means:
- What people think when they hear your guild's name
- How your guild is seen within the community
- What kind of players it attracts
Branding helps you define all of that on purpose, instead of leaving it to chance.
The visual side
Let's start with what I do best: visuals.
If you played this game ten or so years ago, you know how rare it was to find a guild with an actual logo, and not a screenshot of their in-game tabard. It was just as rare to find one with its own custom website, and not a templated free guild site. Seeing a guild like that made your jaw drop. You knew they meant business.
Today, AI has changed that. Nearly everyone has a logo, but it's often easy to spot when AI made it, because it's usually not really a logo. It's an illustration with generic imagery, like a Horde or Alliance banner with the guild's name on it. Don't get me wrong, that's fine. WoW should be a place where you relax, and you're not supposed to need a brand designer for your guild. But if you want to stand out, you have to do something.
One way is to be really good at the game, so you stand out with or without visuals. Very few guilds can do that, and the top-rated ones usually have strong visuals anyway, because they're building something more than a guild.
What visuals say about you
Colors, shapes and fonts tell people who you are before they read a word.
| Friendly, casual or semi-hardcore guild | PvP or hardcore guild | |
|---|---|---|
| Fonts | Cartoony, rounded | Bold, sharp |
| Colors | Friendly, warm tones | Bold, high contrast |
| Icons and imagery | Rounded, approachable | Rougher, more aggressive |
| Overall vibe | A guild that doesn't take itself too seriously | A guild that plays to win |
Tone of voice
How you speak in public matters too. Guilds advertise on Discord servers, forums, Facebook and other places, and the way you write your recruitment posts is the way people will picture you. A joking, welcoming post and a strict, structured one attract very different players.
A website says you're serious
A guild with its own website usually means someone is putting real money into it. A domain, hosting and development all cost something, whether you hire a designer, or pay for AI and invest a lot of your own time. It's clear proof that the people running the guild are serious about what they do, whether you're casual, semi-hardcore or hardcore, PvP or RP. It says you mean business and you're here to last, which makes you desirable in your niche.
You can build all of it yourself
The nice thing about Guild Forging is that you don't have to pay a single dime. If you're willing to put in the time, you can build all of it on your own and, over time, turn your guild into an actual brand. I do offer these as services if you'd rather hand them off, but you don't have to. That's the beauty of it.
A good order to work in:
- Decide what your guild is about and the feeling you want to give.
- Pick your colors and fonts.
- Create your logo.
- Set up your Discord server.
- Write your recruitment posts in your own voice.
- Build a website when you're ready.
